Mental Health
What is mental health?
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Why is mental health important for overall health?
Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health. For example, depression increases the risk for many types of physical health problems, particularly long-lasting conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the risk for mental illness.
Women’s Health
Being a man or a woman has a significant impact on health, as a result of both biological and
gender-related differences. The health of women and
girls is of particular concern because, in many
societies, they are disadvantaged by discrimination rooted in sociocultural factors. For example, women
and girls face increased vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.
While poverty is an important barrier to positive health outcomes for both men and women, poverty tends to yield a higher burden on women and girls’ health
due to, for example, feeding practices (malnutrition)
and use of unsafe cooking fuels (COPD).
